Abul Barkat is one of the most illustrious Professor of Economic sciences, and Director, Japan Study Centre in the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. As an erudite scholar, invincible social thinker and astute academician, he, in his credit, has over 300 path-breaking research works and publications. He has a number of seminal research books on multidimensional issues of human development. His research interest cover wide spectrum of development discourse. He has actively participated in numerous seminars and conferences in 70 countries of the world. Internationally acclaimed for his versatility, Dr. Barkat is also a leading political economist, influential civil society member and sharp-witted media personality. He is widely known for his uncompromising and courageous role in the unending struggle against human deprivation and all types of fundamentalism and extremism. In recognition of his basic research, Justice Ibrahim Memorial Gold Medal was conferred on him, (1999-2000 and 2004-2005) twice by the University of Dhaka. Highly secular, true humanist, nonpareil believer in freedom-mediated development, and committed to minimize the sufferings of poor, excluded and disadvantaged people, Barkat, since his early career, has been immensely contributing in bringing positive changes in human life. Prof. Barkat is the Founder Chairman of ‘Abul Barkat Peace and Progress Foundation (ABPPF)’. He was the President, Bangladesh Economic Association (elected for 2010-12 and 2012-14).
